I hope that by now you have heard about the South Carolina Urban Entomology Charitable Alliance. Dr. Eric Benson, Dr. Pat Zungoli, the Development team at Clemson University and numerous companies and individuals are working together to save the Urban Entomology Program.
The urban entomology program at Clemson has been and continues to be incredibly supportive of the industry in which we are all blessed to work in. The department, its staff, students and graduates have opened doors and provided opportunities that impact us every day.
From the numerous termite and pest control technicians that have gone through training provided by Clemson Urban Entomology that are employed by companies in our state today, to the numerous continuing education opportunities that we have benefited from over the years the impact to our industry’s professionalism and continued success is clear. Also, many past undergraduate and graduate students of the program work in our industry here in the state as well.
It has been gratifying to see the support that is coming in from individuals and companies both large and small to make this initiative a reality. Click here to view a list of companies and/or individuals that have already pledged their support.

There are approximately 1,000 licensed pest control companies in SC. With Clemson’s Urban Entomology program, smaller companies can turn to us for technical help. We respond to over 250 requests for information and 200 insect identifications each year.
For 54 years, Clemson Entomology was the driving force for the Annual Winter Meeting and continues to help with the new Pest Pro Summit Program. For almost 30 years, Urban Entomologists at Clemson have teamed with specialists in the Department of Pesticide Regulation to teach the Apprentice and Master Termite Technician workshops. Since 2004, we have provided the popular Wood Infestation Report training program. For the last 20 years, Pat Zungoli and Eric Benson have taught the week-long Master Pest Control Technician Course. Clemson Urban Entomologists have also presented at countless other pest control programs around the state and around the country representing SC. Via Clemson Urban Entomology training programs we have contact each year with about 600 to 800 pest management professionals, many of whom are new technicians in need of training.
Over the last 20 years, Clemson Urban Entomologists along with graduate students have evaluated over 80 different professional pest control products including termite baits, termite bait systems, liquid termiticides, borates, ant baits, cockroach baits, and a wide variety of insecticide sprays, dusts, powders, and granules. In most cases, we tested the products to evaluate their efficacy on common SC pests. This gives Clemson Urban Entomologists first-hand knowledge about many of the products you use every day, providing you with unbiased, researched information.
For the last 40 years, approximately 270 issues of Pestalk has been published and Clemson Urban Entomologists have had articles related to the industry in every issue. Over the last 22 years, the Urban Entomology lab has also produced over 60 fact sheets that PMPs can share with their clients with information about pests and control options, most specially written for residents in SC.
There are approximately 1,000 licensed pest control companies in SC. With Clemson’s Urban Entomology program, smaller companies can turn to us for technical help. We respond to over 250 requests for information and 200 insect identifications each year.Over last 37 years, Pat Zungoli and Eric Benson have directly mentored 34 undergraduate and graduate students, many of whom have gone on to be leaders in the pest control industry.
Pest Management industry leaders across South Carolina have joined in support of the Clemson University Urban Entomology Program. They are volunteer members of the newly formed South Carolina Urban Entomology Charitable Alliance, which held its first meeting in April of 2019. The council’s goal is to generate awareness of the importance of the urban entomology program and to raise $10,000,000 to further its mission.
The South Carolina Urban Entomology Charitable Alliance links the Clemson University Urban Entomology Program with a network of the South Carolina Pest Control Association, pest control owners, operators, vendor manufacturers and supporters across South Carolina. These companies and organizations have united to bring support for the program to the forefront and ensure a sustainable future for training and research for The Clemson University Urban Entomology Program.
The South Carolina Urban Entomology Charitable Alliance (SCUECA) is a fundraising and advocacy organization committed to ensuring a sustainable future for the Clemson University Urban Entomology Program. This funding and advocacy council is critical in assuring that we have the resources to support the immediate and long-range goals of the program.
In order to achieve a comprehensive program to support the $500,000,000 South Carolina pest control industry for decades to come, an endowment to sustain the Urban Entomology Program at Clemson University is critical. Such an endowment would establish a comprehensive approach toward faculty, student, research and training to support the South Carolina pest control industry in perpetuity.
